"Dogs are not our whole life, but they make our lives whole." Roger Caras
All Animal Jewelry is just that and a little more. We are about animals and the natural world we all abide in. What y
ou'll find in these pages are lions and tigers and bears, dolphins, whales and octopi, dogs and cats, otters and ferrets, sheep, llamas, horses and mules, wolf and eagle, trees and waves and sunsets, and many, many birds. We love what we create and we create what we love!
Tom and Lisa are the owners and designers, the creators and the imagineers. And, of course, so are YOU! We can work with you to create what you dream of or have longed for but haven't been able to find...until now! Check out the DIY as well as our jewelry and you will get an idea of what we are able to do. We create little sculptures using the ancient lost wax method by carving the new piece in wax. We also fabricate: the process of cutting and sawing and bending and shaping and soldering until...voila! A piece of jewelry!
Tom was b
orn and raised in the Pacific Northwest. Backpacking and camping, river rafting and sailing. The rivers and forest were his backyard. While in college Tom had a moment of discovery half serendipitous, half willpower when he, on a whim, answered an ad calling for a bid to create two hundred commemorative charms. Although Tom knew nothing about making jewelry he gave a bid and won the job. Tom then focused his energies and commitment to becoming a jeweler. Meanwhile, Lisa grew up at the ocean's edge in Southern California and playing in the canyons of the southwest, then exploring the New England woods and polliwog ponds during summer
s with her grandparents. Whether a horned toad, a horse, a dog or a starfish she was enamored with every living thing as witnessed by her mother who wrote on the front piece of the book By the Seashore, "to Lisa, who loves all living things" when Lisa was but 6 years old. While attending La Jolla High School her art teacher, Suzanne Suit, introduced Lisa to cloisonne' and basic silversmithing. So began Lisa's career as a jeweler.
Both Tom and Lisa have an art background and were drawn to miniatures by the time they were in high school. In college they both discovered the art of lost wax casting, after college they discovered each other, and now, for more than 30 years they have been creating jewelry while living on the gorgeous central Oregon coast in the Pacific Northwest. Where their interest began and as yet remain is their love of creating animal jewelry, spirit symbols of earth's creatures. Lisa and Tom believe animals are to be respected and treasured; they can be teachers, wonderful spirits, companions and influences in our lives, and for some, sustenance, and so they deserve our respect.
Thoreau's message rings true for all of us: "We need the tonic of wildness...we can never have enough of nature."
Tom and Lisa have the distinct pleasure of working with three women who bring their own art experience, life experience and beauty to helping create jewelry for you to enjoy. Dana Patton is from Baku in Azerbaijan. Dana received her degree in art and is a live wire who loves cats and babies, dogs and birds. Very capable and energetic, so full of life and such a great cook, we all admire her talents. Keli Mallette lived on a sailboat in Florida for ten years. Keli is our computer tech and go-to person being the youngster on the team! Becky Cook, a native of the Pacific Northwest, is a ceramic artist with her own studio and with a long history of animal encounters including a river otter that shared their family home for years. Becky circumnavigates everyone's field of debris and keeps everything together!
We have had an online presence for more than 10 years representing our Jan David Design Jewelers brand. All Animal Jewelry is focused on the planet and deserved it's own spotlight. So here we are, ENJOY!
